Understanding your fertility is one of the most empowering things you can do when planning a family. Whether you are just beginning to explore your fertility options, have experienced delays in conception, or are considering preserving fertility (egg freezing), a fertility evaluation offers valuable insights into your reproductive health.

What Is a Fertility Evaluation?

A fertility evaluation is a thorough assessment of your reproductive health. It typically involves a series of consultations, physical examinations if appropriate, and targeted diagnostic tests for both individuals and couples. The purpose is to understand any factors that may be impacting fertility and to create a plan that reflects your unique needs and goals.

At JIVA Fertility, our approach is personal, clear, and designed to help you feel confident from the beginning. You can book an appointment directly and no GP referral is required.

Who should Consider a Fertility Evaluation?

You will benefit from fertility evaluation if:

  • You have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success OR sooner at six months if you are over 35 years or you have a known reproductive health condition such as PCOS or endometriosis
  • You’re thinking about preserving your fertility through egg freezing
  • You’re a single individual or part of a same-sex couple planning a family
  • You’ve experienced repeated miscarriages and want clearer answers

Even if you’re not ready to conceive yet, an early evaluation can offer the information that you need to help you make informed decisions about the future.

What Happens During a Fertility Evaluation?

Every evaluation at JIVA Fertility is led by a Reproductive Medicine Consultant with expertise in fertility diagnostics and treatment. Here’s how we typically approach the process:

1. Initial Consultation to assess your Medical History

Your consultant will begin by learning about your menstrual cycle, any previous pregnancies, lifestyle factors, medications, and current symptoms. If you're attending as a couple, both partners will be involved in the assessment.

2. Physical Examination and Pelvic Ultrasound

Assessment of your body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure will provide information about your general health. Abdominal and pelvic exam if required, and a transvaginal ultrasound allow us to assess your uterus and ovaries. This helps identify issues like fibroids, ovarian cysts, or signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

3. Female Fertility Tests

These laboratory tests help us understand your hormonal profile and overall health. They may include:

  • a blood test for AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) to gauge your egg reserve and FSH, LH, oestradiol and prolactin levels if appropriate
  • Screening for Thyroid function Vitamin D, full blood count, and metabolic conditions such as Diabetes
  • Infections screening for rubella, chlamydia and gonorrhoea

4. HyCoSy – Checking Fallopian Tube patency

If you're trying to conceive naturally and there are no contra-indications, we perform HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography) to confirm that your fallopian tubes are open. Some may require a surgical procedure called laparoscopy and dye test under general anaesthesia

5. Male Fertility Assessment

Male partners usually undergo semen analysis to check semen volume, sperm count, motility, and morphology (size & shape of sperm) and urine testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Depending on those results, additional testing may be recommended.

6. Focused Assessments for Specific Concerns

We offer in-depth assessments tailored for:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Recurrent miscarriage

These evaluations are designed to provide faster, clearer insights and reduce delays in accessing the right care.

Your Personalised Plan

After all results are reviewed, your consultant will meet with you to discuss the findings and walk you through next steps. Your treatment plan may include:

  • Nutritional and lifestyle adjustments
  • Ovulation Induction medications and monitoring
  • Assisted conception options such as IVF, ICSI, or IUI
  • Referrals to other experts if needed, such as dietitians or counsellors

The goal is always to offer support that is timely, relevant, and aligned with your reproductive goals.

Why Timing Matters

Fertility is influenced by many factors—some of which are easier to manage when identified early. An evaluation can help:

  • Identify issues before they affect your chances of conceiving
  • Offer insight into when and how to move forward
  • Reduce anxiety by giving you a clear picture of your reproductive health

Whether results confirm everything is on track or highlight areas to explore further, knowing where you stand is a powerful first step.

One of the benefits of coming to JIVA Fertility is that you don’t need to wait for a GP referral. You can contact us directly and get started at your own pace. This means fewer delays and more control over your fertility journey.
